The best Charming Hotels in France
Domaine de Monrecour ٭٭٭٭
A Fairytale Castle in France’s Valley of Five Châteaux
The moment you pass through Domaine de Monrecour’s gates, you’re transported to another era. As I drove up the tree-lined drive, the castle revealed itself along with a breathtaking panorama of the Dordogne Valley.
Set within 12 hectares of pristine grounds, this 4-star château-hotel offers an authentic slice of French aristocratic life, complete with heated pools, gastronomic dining, and views of neighboring medieval castles that seem almost too perfect to be real.
The rooms
The 40 rooms are thoughtfully distributed between the main castle and several elegant outbuildings. In the château itself, rooms feature period details like wood paneling and high ceilings while offering modern amenities.
During my stay, I chose one of the annex rooms and was delighted by the perfect blend of contemporary comfort and château charm.
Each room comes equipped with air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and courtesy trays – but it’s the views that steal the show. Depending on your room, you might wake up to vistas of either Château de Beynac or Château des Milandes, two of the valley’s most impressive medieval fortresses.
Dining and Drinks
La Table de Monrecour transforms from a casual bistro at lunch into a romantic gastronomic destination each evening. I still remember our dinner there – the menu showcased the best of Périgord cuisine, from duck foie gras with Espelette pepper to perfectly cooked poultry with black truffles. The dining room’s soft lighting and elegant decor create an atmosphere that matches the sophisticated food.
Breakfast might be my favorite memory – served in the castle’s ballroom adorned with tapestries and a magnificent stone fireplace. Even if you’re staying in the annexes, you get to start your day like royalty. Weather permitting, take your coffee on the south-facing terrace while watching hot air balloons drift over the valley – a truly magical morning experience.
Wellness and Relaxation
The domain features two heated outdoor pools, each with its own distinct atmosphere. The adults-only pool offers a peaceful retreat with cocktail service – perfect for those moments when you want to soak in the château views in tranquility.
The family pool ensures everyone can enjoy a refreshing dip without disturbing others’ relaxation.
The spa services, though I didn’t try them personally, start at €75 for 45 minutes and come highly recommended by other guests.

Unique Experiences
You’re in the heart of what locals call “La vallée des 5 châteaux” – a stretch of the Dordogne where five medieval castles face each other across the river valley. The hotel serves as a launch point for hot air balloon flights, offering a bird’s-eye view of this remarkable landscape.
From the terraces, you can spot Château de Beynac, the Gardens of Marqueyssac, and Château des Milandes – each worthy of a day’s exploration.
This magical property sits at the heart of one of France’s most remarkable regions. You’re minutes from several “Plus Beaux Villages de France” (Most Beautiful Villages of France) including La Roque-Gageac, Domme, and Limeuil.
Whether you’re exploring medieval towns, canoeing the Dordogne, or simply enjoying a glass of wine on the terrace while watching the sunset paint neighboring castles in golden light, Monrecour offers that perfect blend of luxury and authenticity that makes the Dordogne Valley so special.
I recommend staying at least a week – there’s simply too much to see and do in this region. Plus, you’ll want time to enjoy the hotel itself, from leisurely breakfasts in the ballroom to afternoon dips in the pool and romantic dinners under the stars. This is France at its most enchanting, where history, gastronomy, and natural beauty create an unforgettable experience.

Discover the villages of Dordogne Valley
Every corner here tells a story – whether it’s Beynac-et-Cazenac with its imposing fortress (where you can spot four other castles from the ramparts!), or the hanging gardens of Marqueyssac offering those postcard-perfect views over the river. The best part? These villages aren’t just museum pieces – they’re living, breathing communities where you can enjoy a coffee in a medieval square or pick up fresh bread from a centuries-old building.
