I’ve always dreamed of exploring the French Riviera, but I worried it would be just another crowded tourist destination. Living in Toulouse gave me the perfect opportunity to discover the lesser-known side of this stunning region – and wow, what a difference it makes when you venture off the typical tourist path!

Instead of relying on mainstream travel guides, I dove into local tourist bureau recommendations, chatted with chambre d’hôtes hosts, and discovered some absolutely magical places. My journey into these hidden gems started completely by chance when I booked a stay in Tourrettes-sur-Loup. I chose it simply for the peaceful location, beautiful architecture, and that inviting pool – but I found myself in one of the most enchanting villages I’ve ever seen!

The Château de la Napoule became another favorite discovery. While French visitors know about this gorgeous castle, international tourists often miss it completely. The terraces overlooking the Mediterranean offer that perfect blend of history and beauty, without the overwhelming crowds you’ll find at more famous spots along the coast.

Château de la Napoule: A Fairytale Castle with an Artistic Soul

Want to discover one of the most unique castles on the French Riviera? Skip the crowds at more famous spots and head to Château de la Napoule! I discovered this magical place in the most perfect way possible – from the sea path that starts at Plage de la Raguette.

This small detour makes all the difference in experiencing the castle as it was meant to be seen.

Instead of heading straight to the main entrance, start your visit from Plage de la Raguette and take the seaside path. The first view of the château from this perspective is absolutely breathtaking – the castle emerges from the cliffs, its towers and terraces dramatically positioned against the endless blue of the Mediterranean.

This is exactly how the castle was designed to be experienced, facing the infinite expanse of the sea. It would be such a shame to miss this perspective!

In 1918, American artists Henry and Marie Clews fell in love with this then-sleeping castle. What began as a simple renovation turned into a 17-year artistic adventure. Marie became the architect and landscape designer, while Henry filled every corner with mythical sculptures.

Together, they created an enchanting blend of Gothic, Rococo, Saracen, and Romanesque styles that some locals find “kitch” – but I think that’s exactly what makes it magical!

The gardens are designed as a journey through their story, with numbered panels guiding you through gorgeous Mediterranean plantings, ancient trees, and surprising sculptures. The seaside terraces are absolutely stunning, seeming to float between sky and water.

Don’t miss the guided tour of the interior (at 11:30, 14:30, or 15:30)! You’ll enter through a door inscribed with “Once upon a time…” – perfect for a castle where the owners often dressed in period costumes and lived out their artistic fantasies. The most touching spot is the tower of “La Mancha” where the couple now rests, facing the sea together. Their tomb vaults remain open, supposedly allowing their souls to reunite every hundred years.

Tourrettes-sur-Loup: The Violet Village That Time Forgot

Most people go to the French Riviera and focus only on the well-known Èze village. While Eze is magnificent and well deserving of its fame, there are so many incredible places nearby that most people haven’t heard about. Tourrettes-sur-Loup is one of them, and I discovered it completely by chance while searching for a peaceful base in the region.

Perched dramatically on a rocky spur between Nice and Vence, Tourrettes-sur-Loup isn’t just another pretty French village – it’s the ‘Cité des Violettes,’ where artisans have been crafting everything from violet jam to candied flowers since the 1800s. Trust me, it’s exactly the kind of place that will make you wonder why you ever stuck to the crowded streets of Nice or Saint-Paul-de-Vence!

The journey here is part of the magic. From Nice, it’s a scenic 45-minute drive through the Provençal countryside. Take bus #510 if you’re using public transport – the views of the Mediterranean as you wind up into the hills are worth every hairpin turn. I always recommend getting here early to watch the morning light illuminate the stone facades and catch the local bakers preparing the day’s fresh violet-flavored treats.

The moment I stepped through the medieval gate, it felt like entering a world where time had gracefully paused. Unlike its famous neighbor Saint-Paul-de-Vence, packed with tourists year-round, Tourrettes-sur-Loup maintains an authentic charm that’s increasingly rare in the French Riviera. The village’s identity is deeply intertwined with its violet cultivation tradition – these delicate flowers have been more than just a pretty sight since the 1800s, they’re the heart of local culture.

Want the best photo spot in town? Get to the public parking – there’s a bridge from where you can walk to the village. This is the perfect spot to see the entire stone structure with the mountains behind. Don’t overlook the medieval ramparts walk either. This ancient defensive wall now serves as a circular pathway offering breathtaking views of the Loup valley. Time your walk for sunset, when the golden light transforms the limestone cliffs and the distant Mediterranean into a painter’s palette.

Gourdon: The Most Incredible Coffee Break View in the French Riviera!

Looking for those hidden spots that make the French Riviera so special? I found one completely by accident, and I absolutely need to tell you about it! What started as a simple coffee break on our way from Tourrettes-sur-Loup to Grasse turned into one of the most breathtaking discoveries of our trip.

The drive alone is an adventure you won’t forget! Instead of taking the main road, follow the winding mountain route that takes you through the Gorges du Loup. The travel experience alone is worth the while ! You’ll pass by the magnificent Cascades du Saut du Loup (absolutely worth a stop! continue reading as I will talk about it later again), and each turn brings another stunning view.

But nothing prepares you for that first glimpse of Gourdon! When you reach the parking lots before the village entrance, you’ll understand why they call it the Eagle’s Nest of Provence. The panorama is absolutely incredible – the entire Côte d’Azur spreads out before you, from Nice all the way to the Southern Alps! Don’t worry too much about timing your visit – I loved how the view changed throughout the day, with each hour bringing different lights and shadows across the landscape.

This is also the place where the flights in “parapante” (paragliding) have their starting point. I was too dissapointed to not know about this, I would have definetly tried the experience. I can only imagine the spectacular views you get over the village and the valley !

While the views might bring you here, the picturesque village’s charm will make you stay! I fell in love with this tiny shop called “Confiseries Florian” where they make the most amazing candied fruits. You absolutely have to try their “Lamelles d’écorces de citron au sucre” – these candied lemon peel strips are the perfect balance of sweet and citrus. I may have bought a few extra boxes to take home!

Looking for the perfect lunch spot? Skip the obvious tourist terraces and head to “AU VIEUX FOUR”! While it doesn’t have the panoramic views, it offers something even more special – authentic local cuisine served in the most charming stone “ruelle” (narrow street). The atmosphere here is exactly what you dream of when you imagine a French village restaurant!

Want to make your visit even more exciting? We ended up combining it with a kayaking adventure in the Gorges du Loup! Just be warned – even in May, that water is ice cold, but it’s such an incredible way to experience this dramatic landscape from a different angle.

Cascades du Saut du Loup: A 2€ Stop That’s Worth Every Cent!

Here’s a tip for your drive from Tourrettes-sur-Loup to Gourdon – keep your eyes peeled for a small sign pointing to the Cascades du Saut du Loup! It’s one of those easy-to-miss spots on the right side of the road, but trust me, you don’t want to drive past this one.

I know what you might be thinking – paying to see a natural waterfall? But those 2€ per person are totally worth it! They maintain the viewing areas beautifully, and there’s even a coffee shop on site where you can take in the views while enjoying a drink.

We visited in May, and the timing couldn’t have been better! After all the spring rains, the waterfall was absolutely spectacular – the water crashing down created this impressive natural show. If you’re planning your visit, spring is definitely the time to come. In summer, the waterfall can be less impressive if there hasn’t been much rainfall.

Want to make your visit even more special? We combined it with kayaking on the Loup River, which gave us a completely different perspective of the gorge. Seeing the power of the water from both above and on the river itself was such a unique experience!

This isn’t just another roadside stop – it’s one of those hidden gems that reminds you why exploring the less obvious spots of the French Riviera can be so rewarding!

The Magic of Fragonard: Inside the Original Perfume Factory

Skip the modern factories and head straight to the historic Fragonard house in the heart of the town of Grasse! I chose this location over the others because it’s housed in the original Fragonard building – the architecture alone is pure Provence, and it absolutely sets the mood for what you’re about to discover.

I’ll be honest – when I heard the tour was free, I was a bit skeptical! I thought it would be just a quick walk-through followed by an aggressive sales pitch. But wow, was I wrong! The tour turned out to be absolutely fascinating, taking us through both the history of perfume-making and the actual process. It’s one of those rare free experiences that actually delivers way more than you expect!

While I didn’t get to participate in their perfume-making workshop (definitely on my list for next time!), the regular tour was impressive enough. They take you through every step of the perfume-making process, and you really get a sense of the artistry and science behind it all.

Here’s a little secret most visitors miss – after you finish shopping, look for the terrace near the toilets. Take a moment to pause there and look to the left, just past the Fragonard house. You’ll discover the most beautiful panorama of Grasse! It’s the perfect spot to take in the beauty of this perfume town.

Want to avoid the crowds? I visited in May around 11:00 AM, and it was perfect! The tour groups were small enough that we could all see and hear everything clearly. I can imagine it gets much busier in peak summer months though!

Now, let’s talk about shopping – because if you are like me, you won’t be able to resist! I ended up buying perfumes at both the Grasse and Èze locations (oops!). My absolute favorite is “Belle Chérie” – it’s become my signature scent! But the best value? Their soaps! I picked up one in the “Belle de Grasse” fragrance (loved the name as a souvenir from this special place), and you won’t believe this – I’ve been using it daily since May 2024, and here we are in February 2025, and it’s still going strong!

The historic Fragonard factory in Grasse isn’t just a tourist stop – it’s a journey into the heart of French perfume-making! Whether you’re a perfume enthusiast or just curious about the process, this is one of those authentic experiences that makes traveling so special.

The Lérins Islands: A Hidden Paradise Just Minutes from Cannes!

Want to escape the glitz and glamour of Cannes for something completely different? Let me tell you about one of my favorite discoveries – the Lérins Islands! As an architect, I couldn’t resist visiting Saint-Honorat Island with its incredible fortress that seems to float on water. La forteresse de l’île Saint-Honorat is absolutely stunning, rising dramatically from its peninsula on the southern tip of the island!

While Sainte-Marguerite Island (the other main island) offers a beautiful nature escape, Saint-Honorat captured my heart with its architectural heritage. The fortified monastery looks like a castle tour sitting right on the water – it’s an absolute dream for anyone who loves historical architecture!

Getting there is part of the fun. While you can take the regular ferry or boat trips from Cannes, I highly recommend renting your own boat! There’s something magical about approaching these islands at your own pace, choosing your perfect viewing angle of the fortress. It gives you the freedom to explore both islands on your schedule and find those perfect photo spots that you just can’t get from the regular ferry.

What makes Saint-Honorat so special is how it combines stunning medieval architecture with the natural beauty of the Mediterranean. The fortress isn’t just photogenic – it’s a testament to centuries of history, standing proud against the backdrop of endless blue sea.

Whether you’re an architecture enthusiast like me or just looking for a peaceful escape from the bustle of the French Riviera, the Lérins Islands offer something truly special. It’s one of those places that reminds you why exploring beyond the mainland can lead to the most magical discoveries!

Èze Beach: A Hidden Paradise Between the Cliffs and Sea – And Yes, You Can Get Here by Train!

Everyone knows about the medieval village of Èze perched high up in the cliffs, but let me tell you about my favorite discovery – the beach below! Stretching long and narrow along the coast, Plage d’Èze offers something increasingly rare on the French Riviera: tranquility with a view!

Imagine this: dramatic mountain landscapes rising behind you, crystal-clear waters in shades of turquoise and sapphire blue in front, and the beautiful silhouette of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat to the west. Yes, you might hear the occasional train rumbling past on the Nice-Monaco line above, but that’s part of the charm – and speaking of trains, here’s my favorite tip: you can actually reach this paradise by taking a 17-minute TER train ride from Nice!

From June 15th to September 15th, the beach is monitored by lifeguards, making it perfect for families. Want some adventure? The Eze Nautical Club rents kayaks and canoes – it’s a fantastic way to explore the coastline and get a different perspective of those impressive cliffs!

While this isn’t your typical sandy beach (bring water shoes), the pebbles and rocks mean fewer crowds and more space to breathe. The beach stretches from the small marina at Cap Roux to Cap Estel, with plenty of spots to find your perfect corner of paradise. Definetly a great beach day plan !

Where to Eat? You’ve got options here! There are two beach clubs – Anjuna Plage and Papaya Beach – where you can enjoy a proper French Riviera beach club experience. Whether you want a casual lunch or a fancy Mediterranean feast, you’re covered!

Getting There (It’s a Bit of an Adventure!)

You’ve got three ways to reach the beach:

• From Èze train station (my favorite option!)
• Through a tunnel near the Post Office by the Town Hall
• Via a footbridge on Chemin de l’Ortigué at the west end of town

Whether you’re looking to escape the crowds of Nice or just want to experience a more authentic slice of the French Riviera, Èze beach might just become your favorite discovery. While everyone else is queuing to visit the famous village above, you’ll be soaking in those incredible views from your peaceful spot by the sea!
