Did you know that the French Riviera receives over 300 days of sunshine each year? Living in France for seven years gave me the wonderful opportunity to explore the southern regions, and I can tell you – spring on the Côte d’Azur is truly magical!
As winter fades and spring emerges, this legendary coastline transforms into a paradise of blooming flowers, vibrant festivals, and perfect Mediterranean temperatures. From the lemon festivals in Menton to the quiet coastal paths of Cap Ferrat before summer crowds arrive, I’ve discovered what makes this region so special during springtime.
Whether wandering through Nice’s morning markets, hiking the perfume trails above Grasse, or finding a quiet cove in Antibes, there’s something about the French Riviera in spring that captivates me every time.
The light is perfect for photography, the restaurants are filled with fresh seasonal produce, and the beaches start to come alive – but you can still find peaceful spots to yourself.
Read on if you are planning your trip for spring, or head out to my article about how to see the most of the French Riviera in only 5 days!

February and March in the French Riviera: Awakening of the Mediterranean
While other regions of France experience almost a sleeping phase during these months, February and March are the blooming season of the French Riviera.
It is not for nothing that the english came to the french coast in winter. Did you know that the famous “English Promenade” in Nice got its name because of this? People were coming here to enjoy the sun, because the sun is present here, even during the winter.
The most colorful events take place during the months of February and March. This is the time when you can experience the famous Mimosa Festival in Mandelieu-la-Napoule with its golden flower parades or the amazing lemon festival in Menton!

You won’t believe the burst of golden magic that takes over Mandelieu-La Napoule every February! I had the incredible opportunity to experience the Fête du Mimosa, and let me tell you – it’s so much more than just a flower festival!

In 2026, the celebration runs from February 11-15, transforming this charming French Riviera town into a wonderland of yellow blooms and festive energy.
Imagine standing along Avenue Henry Clews as illuminated floats covered in mimosa flowers parade past, while street artists and live music create the perfect carnival atmosphere!
The festival includes everything from a children’s carnival (complete with face painting and bouncy castles!) to a grand banquet under the stars, topped off with fireworks over the beach.
My favorite part is the Sunday Grand Corso with its flower battle – it’s absolutely magical! Just don’t wait until the last minute to book your tickets (they’re 19€ for adults and 16€ for kids) because this golden celebration sells out faster than croissants at a morning bakery!

If that was not enough, the biggest carnival in France takes place for 2 weeks every February! This year, in 2026, it’s taking place from February 11th to the 1st of March.
The Carnival of Nice is one of Europe’s biggest winter festivals, held every year in Nice with huge parades of giant floats, music, dancers, and a different theme each edition.
It’s also famous for the “Battle of Flowers,” where performers on decorated floats toss thousands of flowers into the crowd along the Promenade des Anglais.

If you can’t get to the region during these festival, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t come at all.
There are a lot of hikes on the French Riviera, and you can’t enjoy most of them during the hot summer temperatures.
But February and March are the perfect moments to discover optimal hiking temperatures on the iconic coastal paths without summer crowds.

The marinas are pretty incredible this time of year too. I love hanging out at Port Vauban in Antibes, watching the crews get everything perfect for summer. There’s something so fascinating about seeing these magnificent boats getting their pre-season makeover.
Spring is also when the local markets come alive with the most amazing produce!
I discovered this cute little artichoke festival in Menton that changed how I cook forever. The spring vegetables here are just incredible – the asparagus is so tender, the peas are sweet as candy, and oh my goodness, those first spring strawberries!
The best part? You can actually take your time exploring and chatting with the local vendors without bumping into a million other tourists.

April in the French Riviera: Perfect Weather and Easter Celebrations
April in the French Riviera is when everything comes together perfectly!
The weather is just right – not too hot, not too cold – and the whole coast buzzes with Easter celebrations.
Every little coastal town has its own special market or festival, and the smell of fresh bread and chocolates from the local bakeries is absolutely incredible!
You absolutely cannot miss the coastal walk around Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat! It’s my absolute favorite spring activity.
The path starts right at the charming port, winds past the majestic lighthouse, and takes you all the way to the hidden gem of Plage des Fossettes.
The whole loop takes about two hours, but trust me – you’ll want to stop every few minutes to take photos of those stunning Mediterranean views!

Speaking of stunning views – April is when the French Riviera turns into sports fan heaven with the Monte Carlo Tennis Masters!
Even if you’re not a huge tennis fan, watching matches with that gorgeous Monaco backdrop is something else.
Just remember to book your tickets way in advance – this tournament sells out super quickly!
But here’s my personal highlight – the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in April is pure magic.
I visited during rose season, and wow! Imagine walking through gardens where the roses perfectly match the soft pink of the villa walls.
It’s like stepping into a painting! The gardens are designed with different themes, and in spring, they’re all showing off their best colors.

Want to know the best part? You still get those lovely shoulder season rates in April, just before prices jump up for the May festivals.
Hotels, restaurants, and even some attractions offer better deals than you’ll find in peak season. I always tell my friends – if you want the perfect mix of good weather, beautiful scenery, and reasonable prices, April is your month!
May in the French Riviera: Festival Season Begins
May is when the French Riviera transforms into festival central! But it comes with a few twists you should know about.
The Cannes Film Festival is absolutely iconic – and yes, you might spot some celebrities!
But there’s this funny running joke among us French folks: it ALWAYS rains during the festival. Like clockwork! Plus, the crowds can be pretty intense.
Want my secret tip? Skip the festival chaos and hop on a boat to the Lerins islands instead.
Ile Saint-Honorat and Ile-Saint Marguerite are peaceful havens with the most incredible views. You’ll get all the beauty of the French Riviera without fighting through festival crowds!

Now, about the Monaco Grand Prix – it’s spectacular, but here’s something most guides won’t tell you: the entire city transforms into a race track!
While that’s exciting for F1 fans, it’s not ideal if you’re hoping to explore Monaco’s usual charm.
If it’s your first time visiting Monaco, I’d honestly suggest picking another month.
You’ll get a much better feel for the real Monaco without all the race barriers and grandstands everywhere.

But it’s not all crowds and chaos!
May is when the Mediterranean finally warms up enough for swimming – and wow, do the locals know it!
Last year, I couldn’t believe how packed the beaches were already. The water is just perfect – not too cold, not too warm.

My absolute favorite May activity is the Rose Festival in Grasse!
The perfume factory tours are something special – you’ll learn all about how they transform these beautiful flowers into the perfumes you see in fancy shops. It’s fascinating! Just make sure you book your factory tour in advance – they fill up quickly during the festival.
May is also when museums start their extended summer hours, often with special exhibitions. This means you can spend those warm evenings exploring culture instead of fighting for a restaurant table in the tourist hotspots!

The public transport here is amazing – you really don’t need a car to see all the main attractions!
Some fantastic options:
- Nice: Hôtel Petit Palais is a great option! Check out my list bellow for other ideas!
- Menton: Look for hotels near the old town for easy festival access. Hôtel De Londres answers “oui” to all of that !
April: Perfect Timing for Luxury Spots
April is THE month to experience Cannes or Monaco without breaking the bank!
The prices are still reasonable before they skyrocket for the Film Festival and Grand Prix in May.
And oh my goodness, let me tell you about Eze! This gorgeous hilltop village is actually enjoyable in April – unlike summer when you can barely move through the tiny streets. Trust me, you’ll want to avoid those summer crowds!

La Perle d’Eze is an aparthotel that gives you all the comforts of home with amazing French Riviera views!
Just 2km from Eze beach, it features a seasonal outdoor pool and lovely gardens. Each apartment comes with its own balcony where you can enjoy city views with your morning coffee!
What I love about these apartments is how well-equipped they are. You get a full kitchen with everything you need – refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, and kettle. Perfect for whipping up a quick breakfast or storing those market finds! The air conditioning is a real plus for warmer spring days.
Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned for exploring – just 2.5km from the stunning Cap Estel coves and 8km from Monaco’s Fontvieille district.

May: Local Charm and Coastal Beauty
May is when you’ve got some really exciting options ! I absolutely fell in love with Tourrettes-sur-Loup last May – imagine waking up to views of both the mountains AND the Mediterranean!
It’s part of the “arrière-pays niçois” (Nice’s backyard, as I like to call it), and wow, what an experience! Le Mazet de Tourrettes was our home base, and those breakfast moments on the terrace, watching the sun rise over both the Alps and the sea – absolutely priceless!

For coastal vibes, you can’t go wrong with Menton, Nice, or Antibes. These towns are perfect for beach access but still have that lovely local feeling in May before the summer tourists arrive.
Pro tip: Wherever you choose to stay, book early for May! Even though it’s not peak summer season, those charming small hotels fill up quickly, especially around the festival dates.

The best hotel options In Nice in Spring
Castel Enchanté
Perched on the hills above Nice, Castel Enchanté is an absolute hidden gem!
This 19th-century guest house is just a quick 3km from the famous Promenade es Anglais and Mediterranean beaches, but feels like your own private retreat. You reach it by a private road, which already gives it this wonderful exclusive feeling!
What I love most about this place is its outdoor swimming pool tucked away in the garden – and those views over Parc d’Estienne-d’Orves are just incredible!
Each room here tells its own story with unique decoration (no cookie-cutter hotel vibes here!), and they’ve thought of all the comforts – your own private bathroom and even a kettle for your morning coffee or evening tea.

Hôtel Petit Palais
The Hotel Petit Palais stole my heart! It’s nestled in this gorgeous historic neighborhood full of leafy trees and classic architecture. With just 25 rooms, it has this intimate, boutique feel that I absolutely love.
Each air-conditioned room is beautifully decorated and comes with all the modern amenities you’d expect, including free Wi-Fi.
But here’s the best part – some rooms offer the most amazing views over the Mediterranean or the charming Old Nice! Trust me, waking up to those views is something special.
The location is perfect for mixing up your days – you can spend the morning exploring museums, pop down to the beach for an afternoon swim, and then hit the city center shops before dinner. It’s the perfect base for experiencing all the different sides of Nice!
Hôtel De Londres
I love how this place combines comfort with the perfect location.
The hotel is wrapped in this gorgeous flower garden that just screams French Riviera charm!
Inside, you’ll find peaceful, soundproofed rooms (perfect for light sleepers like me!) with all the essentials – air conditioning (a must for spring nights), flat-screen satellite TV, and free Wi-Fi for planning your next day’s adventures.
Just a 5-minute walk to both the Menton train station and the casino. And if you’re interested in seeing the stunning Basilica Saint-Michel (trust me, you should!), it’s just a kilometer away.
Want to know the best part about being so close to the train station? You can easily explore other coastal towns while using Menton as your peaceful home base!

Nice Airport is just a 27-minute drive, making it super convenient while still feeling wonderfully secluded.

Spring Weather and Packing Essentials
Let’s talk about what to actually pack for the French Riviera in spring! The weather here can be a bit tricky – one day you’re sunbathing, the next you’re reaching for a light jacket. Here’s what you really need to know:
March is still pretty changeable – temperatures usually dance between 12-17°C (54-63°F). Pack layers! You’ll want a warm jacket for mornings and evenings, but something lighter for sunny afternoons. Rain showers pop up sometimes, so a small umbrella is your friend. Keep in mind that swimming is still a bit chilly this month!
April warms up nicely to about 15-20°C (59-68°F). I always pack a mix of long and short sleeves, plus one cozy sweater for evening walks along the coast. This is when I start packing my swimsuit too – not for long swims yet, but you might want to dip your toes in on warmer days!
May is when things really heat up – expect 18-23°C (64-73°F). Now’s the time to pack those summer dresses and shorts, but still keep a light cardigan for evenings. The sea is usually warm enough for swimming, so beach gear is a must! Last May, I practically lived in my swimsuit during afternoons.
For special events (and there are plenty!), pack at least one dressy outfit. The Riviera loves its glamour! For men, a nice blazer and dress shoes will do the trick. Ladies, a cocktail dress and comfortable but elegant shoes are perfect. Just skip the super high heels – those cobblestone streets can be tricky!
Photography enthusiasts, listen up! Spring is bloom season, so bring your macro lens for those gorgeous flower shots. The light is softest in early morning or late afternoon – perfect for catching the mimosas in March or roses in May. A polarizing filter really helps with those stunning coastal shots too.
Pro packing tips:
- A light scarf is your best friend – works for chilly mornings and dressing up evening outfits
- Pack comfortable walking shoes – you’ll want to explore all those charming streets and coastal paths
- Don’t forget sunscreen even in March – the Mediterranean sun can be sneaky!
- A small daypack for exploring is essential – perfect for carrying water, an extra layer, and your camera
Spring Travel Tips and Local Secrets
Let’s talk about restaurants first – and here’s something most guides won’t tell you. Even though it’s not peak season, you still need to book ahead.
Why? Because locals LOVE eating out just as much as tourists do!
I learned this the hard way when I couldn’t get a table at my favorite spot in Antibes on a random Tuesday in April. Most good restaurants are packed for dinner, especially Thursday through Sunday.
Try to book at least 2-3 days ahead, or a week for the more popular places.

Getting around the coast is super easy – the train is your best friend here!
The local train (called TER) runs right along the coast, connecting all the main towns. It’s fast, affordable, and the views are incredible!
Seriously, the stretch between Nice and Monaco is like a movie scene, with the train hugging the coastline.
Pro tip: grab a “ZOU! Pass” if you’re planning to explore multiple towns – it’ll save you a bunch on train fares.
Want to know the best spots for amazing photos? Skip the usual tourist viewpoints and hit the coastal paths (sentiers littoraux). My absolute favorite is the path between Nice and Villefranche-sur-Mer – you’ll get these incredible shots of the bay that most tourists never see. Go early in the morning when the light is soft and you’ll have the path almost to yourself!
As for local markets – oh my goodness, you’re in for a treat! Each town has its own market days and specialties:
- Nice’s Cours Saleya: Tuesday to Sunday mornings (skip Monday – it’s antiques only)
- Antibes Market: Every morning except Monday, best for fresh herbs and local honey
- Cannes Forville Market: Every morning except Monday, famous for its fresh fish
Beyond just visiting in shoulder season, try the local lunch specials. Most restaurants offer a “menu du jour” at lunch for way less than dinner prices. You’ll get the same amazing food at sometimes half the price. Plus, many museums are free on the first Sunday of each month – plan your cultural visits around these dates!
Best budget hack? The locals actually eat dinner a bit earlier than in Paris (around 7:30 PM), and many restaurants offer an “early bird” price if you eat before 8 PM. You’ll get the same amazing food, just a bit earlier and cheaper!

Conclusion
Spring in the French Riviera offers the perfect blend of comfortable weather, cultural events, and natural beauty, without the intense crowds of summer.
Whether you’re drawn to March’s flowering landscapes, April’s perfect temperatures, or May’s prestigious events, each spring month brings its own unique charm to the Côte d’Azur. Start planning your trip now to experience the most enchanting season on the French Riviera!
Don’t forget, wherever you choose to stay, book early for May! Even though it’s not peak summer season, those charming small hotels fill up quickly, especially around the festival dates.

I appreciate these valuable tips for attending festivals to make the most of your visit!
happy to hear that !
This looks like the perfect destination for springtime! Those hotels look so relaxing.
Great info! We spent a day in Cannes a couple of summers ago and loved just roaming the streets. Would love to go back so we will hang on to your tips. thanks!
I plan to go back soon, too! I think you need multiple visits to really see it all and take it all in!
I haven’t made it to the French Riviera yet, but it’s high on my list. It looks very picturesque, and I love sunny and colourful places so I don’t see why I wouldn’t enjoy it 🙂
It was on my bucket list for a long, long time, too!
